The Cutural Value of Chung Hsing New Village

Chung Hsing New Village is one of the first urbanization project and also the greatest of its kind in Taiwan since it was designed when Taiwan restoration in 1949. Therefore its value of preservation is obvious. The importance of Chung Hsing New Village’s urbanization then became the model of the other places of Taiwan. The urbanization has offered a variety of service from education, medical, diet, recreation, and to the end of life. What is the most special and worth preserving are its main office buildings and the neighborhood organization. According to Yaw-Hwa Liou(2009), Chung Hsing New Village is now applying for world heritage qualified by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization. First, it displays the conflict relationship between Taiwan and China. Moreover, the buildings of official accommodation are built according English constructing concept, garden city. Green resources are abundant, which is a featured urbanization plan.
Central Science Park has been on planning fifth developing in Chung Hsing New Village since 2009. Although it faced a wave of opposite sounds, it still entered Chung Hsing New Villageand has built a large complex of industrial park. However, according to Central Science Park’s construction history, a large part of the construction is not fully utilized. If Central Science Park wants to expand its land across Chung Hsing New Village, the worry about the same situation might occur. Therefore, the planning of industrial park is doubtful. What’s more, the development might destroy the cultural heritages without carefully land surveying.
Some of the opposition groups to Central Science Park cited Village Preservation Act to promote importance of preservation of local cultural heritages, social convention, daily life-style, urban landscape and so on. Nevertheless, Chung Hsing New Village’s 50 years of history seemed insufficient to the officials to support the concept of “preservation”, not to mention there are quite numbers of towns and villages older than Chung Hsing New Village are currently under urban renewal evaluation for future revival and industrial upgrades.
Apparently, the locals of Chung Hsing New Village and government can’t establish mutual commitment. Now, the first priority is to gather two sides and survey the village whatever houses, roads, sidewalks, children parks, any kinds of historical and cultural construction. And then, the host of Public Television Video Production (2011, November) said that the second step is to draw a detailed blueprint including how to expand the land of industrial park without destroying them. There is one thing that should not be forgotten: the impact of the value of cultural heritage on the locals and Taiwan. Both sides should keep this in mind to accomplish Chung Hsing New Village’s ideal future.

Maybe you can focus on culture heritage of this village and introduce more features of this culture heritage. Besides, I would like to know more about the concrete negative results of developing Science Park to native people or environment. Or can the village combine two different styles to become modern and old cultural heritage? I am curious about it.

  2. You just made a great research in Taiwanese cultural issue and the meaning behind the event. Apart from discussing the combat between government and Chung Hsin New village, it's suggested to put more focus on the value and sustainable profit of the village. Although it's worth being protected as a featured historic monument, actually speaking, we still need to verify the potential of Chung Hsing New Village and its future value for Taipei city. With further supporting ideas and proof, I believe it'll make the village more convincible to be protected and maintained.

From your article, it seems that Central Science Park is the murder of culture value of Chung Hsing New Village, which is part of urbanization. I think traditional village (also called military dependent's village) go through renovation is inevitable. There's also many examples in Taiwan facing this process, yet except appealing people to have sightseeing here, how to persevere culture heritage is much important and urgent. I suggest that you can find more examples of villages that have same situation as your town. You can also make comparison. Hope it will deepen your theory. I'm looking forward a solution to it.

  4. I am pretty impressed by the thorough research you did for your issues paper. It presents a clear background understanding for those who were not familiar with the history of Chung Hsing New Village and the ongoing process of the Central Science Park. But, what is the main reason for you to write about problems Chung Hsing New Village struggles with?is it the cultural heritage you wished to preserved?Or is it the importance of Chung Hsing New Village’s urbanization you want to emphasize?
If you want to mainly focus on the preservation of historical heritage, I think you can refer to other examples. Such as Xinyi Public Assembly Hall, which is known as Four Four South Village publicly, and It was also once a military dependent's village. To compare the differences and similarities between, and also you can take those example's result as a solution to the problem of Chung Hsing New Village.

  7. This issue is fairly important in Taiwan since many places with cultural significance are faced with the same problem. As you provide us with the issue, perhaps you would also like to find some resolutions to the problem? There is always a question: can economic development and environment protection be balanced? I think here we can replace environment protection as cultural heritage. Can the cultural heritage in Chung Hsing New Village be valued as the amount of money? Why is it so important to protect it? Any personal emotions involved? I think you can also find out whether there are any related social groups that are devoted to protect local cultural heritage, and study how they do it.

  8. Nowadays, more and more places are facing such problem in Taiwan. It is important to learn how to strike a balance between improvement and preservation not only to the government but also to any member of citizen of this island, for such problem may happen anywhere, anytime. It is always so hard to decide whether is more superior and important, not to mention when it happen in your own hometown. You have gathered great information about the issue, and what make me curious is that whether if you are going to stand into a single position in this issue, or just report them in a relatively objective viewpoint. Both can be great style of expository writing, I think.
