Writing about Visual Arts in Constructionist Way

To begin with suggestions for analyzing paintings, preparing for your viewing requires taking detailed notes on what you see and have a picture for latter reference. Note your first impressions. What this article author suggests us to do is never trust our ability to memorize. Especially our first impression, we usually remember little pieces of our feeling and it tends to be too vague so we need to write it down right after we see the picture (Figure 1).

Basic information about the picture should include the name of the painting, the artist, the date and place, the artist particular purpose, and the style of painting. Those pieces of information are all important because they will potentially influence what readers’ point of view. The background of the picture could help readers understand the picture more easily. However, it might affect readers’ comments on the picture because of the height of the artist’s reputation or the popularity of the style, which makes the comment too subjective (Figure 2).

        When studying the subject matter, we should mention people, places, animal, objects, designs, and the most intelligent part, abstract confluences of shapes and colors in the picture. Analyzing a picture isn't an easy job without deep observations. The artist’s elements to express his intention often cover in the shapes, colors, and lines (Figure 3).

        A portrait serves as the representation of a particular person. His or her facial expressions, angle of the body, clothing, and accessories might imply power, superiority, gentleness, aloofness, boredom, innocence or social class. These elements will all construct the main point of view of the 
artist (Figure 4).

As for a landscape, we are suggested to do the research about whether the artist is inviting viewers to enjoy the beauty in the picture, or in contrast the artist want to express paradise lost?  Are elements such as crossroads and storm used symbolically? Why are those people depicted in the picture? Purpose must hide in those elements. That’s why Steps to Writing Well suggests that we put emphasize on them (Figure 5).

    The last suggestions for analyzing paintings is if possible, identify the painting’s period style or “school” (Figure 6). Take Monet’s The Water Lily Pond as an example. Variation of the colors and lights are used in the picture. This kind of style in nineteenth century is called Impressionism.

        What Wyrick, J.(2014), the editor of this writing encyclopedia Steps to Writing Well, suggest us to do is actually write in the style of constructionism. Every element is utilized to construct the artist’s point of view and his intention to express his thoughts. It is a clear and helpful way to adopt Wyrich’s suggestions. With his suggestions, an essay about visual arts would be complete and impressive.

Come out from The Castle

In the second meeting with Professor Liang, she told me that I am now supposed to be a messenger/ mediator between the residents in Chung Hsing New Village “Castle” and people who don’t live in it. Professor mentioned during French Revolution, Louis XVI and his wife were killed by rebels under an inconceivable situation. They used to live in a beautiful and peaceful environment. Although messengers told them the emergency outside their castle, nothing was reversed. What I am playing is the role of the messenger. I should be the bridge from interior castle to outside world. I need to clarify the reality; otherwise I could not save the people inside the castle.

Professor suggested that I force myself to face the ugly blooded side of the reality such as relationship between industrial developments and environment and that I do the research on difference of environmental standards inside and outside Chung Hsing New Village. The problem of Chung Hsing New Village is usage of the land because environment of Chung Hsing New Village is quite different from the one surrounding it. What people outside Chung Hsing New Village think is that Taiwan Provincial Government has lost its function as a political center. The village is now being over protected. What am I going to do is go carefully the plan of National Science Council and specify which part I could surrender and which part I could not. If Central Science Park now has come in, what should it be aware of and pay attention to? What is my bottom line? If Central Science Park stepped on it, what kind of value it would implicate? What is Chung Hsing New Village’s requirement? What should be preserved and what is their value? And my stance toward Central Science Park has change a little bit; perhaps my topic will be change subsequently. I agree with Professor’s suggestions. Until now, my point is still vague because of the swinging stance.


Above is Professor’s suggestion, and then is my classmates’. And one said my previous annotations all took a stand to oppose the coming in of the Advanced Research Park. After reading my annotation 3, she was a little curious about my position now. So maybe I can reemphasize my position after providing the advantages and disadvantages and she thought that would complete my annotation. She popped the question “do you still insist on opposing the establishing of Advanced Research Park?” That’s a good and direct question for me. When completing my whole issue paper, I should put more emphasize on it. Another classmate said the government may really want to help the residents, not only for their own interests. She thought I could talk about what the residents really need and how government can help them. I agree with them. What am I going to do is clarify and specify my position, coming out from the castle where I grow up in order to protect my hometown.
